Five Ways to Stay Fit at Work

Five Ways to Stay Fit at Work It is Good for Business!! As a Civil Engineer for 25 years and more recently online entrepreneur and personal trainer, I have spent many working hours at a desk and computer. I have experienced pain and tightness in my back, shoulders and legs that may have been prevented. The effects of a sedentary lifestyle is talked about all over the media and at some time or another has affected most of us. Symptoms of sitting for much of the day include leg and gluteal muscle loss and disfunction, lower back pain, weight gain, and a number of chronic illnesses including diabetes, depression and…

    Let’s Talk Foot Pain!!

    footpain

Today let’s talk about foot pain during the aging process. This is one topic that many health professionals don’t mention. Exercise and stretching is a very effective prescription to help with foot pain. If that approach fails, your doctor may suggest surgery.  I try to avoid this option as a last resort. But sometimes, surgery is the only option. None the less, we have all felt foot pain. Often, we don’t know the cause or how to make the pain go away. So, we just try to deal with the pain and hope it gets better. Have you been down this road? I know I have. After the birth…

    Creating Muscular Balance

    Creating Muscular Balance

When I first heard of corrective exercise and creating muscular balance, the meaning in my mind was pretty simple. When you have an injury or have been inactive for a while, with help you can get help to regain mobility.  Once you hire a physical therapist or personal training they will create an exercise routine to regain the strength you have lost. When I decided to become a Corrective Exercise Specialist, I realized that there was so much more to recovering from an injury or weakness than just letting the injury heal and getting back to your normal workouts.  There are four basic components to a corrective exercise continuum that…

Life after Covid Hit the World

Life is busy. Ask anyone how they are, and they will most likely say, “I’m great but very busy.” On our planet of more than 7.5 billion people, so many things to do, places to be, and people to see. Two months ago, my life “was” no different. I have two teens, three adult children, a husband, an engineering career, and a growing health and fitness business. I say “was” because once the Covid pandemic hit our world, most everything changed. The gym I worked at closed, I was sent home from work with several family members sick (not Covid, but we didn’t know at the time) and I moved…

    What Is Right for You?

The other day I was talking to several peers, most in their 50’s and 60’s, many of which have some sort of joint or back issue. After the birth of my twins, I found my lower back in quite an altered state, my abdomen muscles non-existent and even severed from the large size of the babies (14 lb total, 5 weeks early) and my sleep being affected by my constant back pain. Another issue might be a knee blowout my friend’s had a number of years ago and are now feeling scar tissue act up when they move. In addition, they may have had a fall which required a hip…

    Aging Gracefully

As a Civil Engineer, I have worked on many types of projects; site plans for homes, roadway projects, and large grading projects to name a few. One thing all of these projects have in common is the success of the project is largely dependent on the foundation and strength of the soil that it is built on. One could build a beautiful home and watch it fall if the foundation hasn’t been properly prepared and designed. Similarly in our bodies, building a good foundation is imperative when we think about aging gracefully. Recently I told one of my clients that I was fighting the aging process with everything I had.…

    Roadblocks

Your driving to your favorite place to visit and as you pull in you realize you can’t get in the driveway because there is a roadblock or barricade keeping from your destination.  You try a different route, but no success. So, you give up and go back home. Starting a workout routine can be similar to the above hypothetical example. We have all been there, maybe the desire to shed a few holiday calories, get rid of pesky back pain, or even follow the “doctor’s” orders.  Whatever the reason, we find many excuses as to what our road block is to getting off the couch and moving our bodies. Here…

    Making It Count

What do you do? Where have you been? Where are you going? Who are you? I’m sure you’ve been asked these invasive questions.  I know I have wanted to fabricate answers to a few of the questions, feeling like I don’t measure up to the interviewee. As a teen, I wanted to major in music. My father dissuaded me in that direction saying that it didn’t really pay well. So, I decided to major in Engineering, which would pay well and be challenging.  When I told my father, he doubted my ability to complete the program. Instead of changing my plan again, I drew a line in the sand and…

    Getting Past the Mind

As I work with clients, I am astounded and inspired by the commitment and tenacity that many have, to keep on working to achieve their goals.  Not all of us have that drive and desire to work out, go to the gym, or take an exercise class. I decided to do a little research on the psychology of working out and creating the habit of keeping healthy movement a priority. Studies show that over 60 percent of American adults don’t get the recommended amount of physical activity and over 25 percent of adults are not active at all. LINK There are many reasons why people aren’t moving. I discussed a…
